Wearside Golf Report 25th September 2019

After a few days of heavy rain and the threat of more to follow the six brave soles that ventured on to the course were dressed in various waterproofs. The slight rain and flooded bunkers was an ominous sign of the weather to come.

The putting competition got underway at about 1.30 and finished just in time for the 2.00 pm match start. The putting green was a bit spongy but overall it was in good condition.

Surprisingly the light rain soon lifted and the sun started to shine so that soon waterproof tops were soon discarded.

Sadly the writer was too lazy to take off the heavy waterproof trousers and found to his dismay after the game that his ordinary trousers were soaking with sweat and I had to change for tea!

Bearing in mind the recent weather the course was in excellent condition and was full of surprises with many of the greens being out of sight when teeing off or even when taking the second shot. A couple of the rough gullies captured a few misplaced balls lead to the general excitement of the day.

Arthur Askey who had joined us for the meal chose the partners for the Foursomes Trophy that resulted in Jim McMicheal and Dave Cramond winning with a combined score of 70.

Jim Walker won the putting competition with a score of 40.

A satisfying meal of mince pie, chips and peas followed by chocolate cake and custard rounded off the day.
