As I stayed on the sick bench I watched with awe as the other 11 golfers
commenced their assault on this tough course.
The weather was bright and dry and the course looked in fine condition.
Hearsay evidence later indicated that the greens were a bit slow but this
apparently added to the adventure of this remarkable venue.
From the pre-dinner chat I learnt that the rough was rough and that some big it players had lost up to 10 balls whilst Alan Port who played a steady game down the middle of the fairways went round with the same ball!
Unsurprisingly, the local boy, Robin Down came in well ahead of the field
with 39 points on a reduced handicap of 20. Steve Sullivan came in second
with 32 points (off a 12 handicap) and Andrew Munro and Chris Morrison
sharing the final honours on 28 points.
After a tasty meal of Cumberland sausage filled Yorkshire pudding and Eton
mess we all started on our home journeys.
I was a bit disappointed with the turnout for this match which may have been influenced by most of the Tynemouth players opting to play at Foxton the following evening.
We should really try to support this charming club.
